Asakusa is the heart of old Tokyo (shitamachi), located in Taito ward on the western bank of the Sumida River. The neighborhood is anchored by Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple, and Nakamise-dori, a 250-metre shopping street that has served pilgrims since the Edo period. Just across the river, Tokyo Skytree dominates the skyline. Asakusa retains a traditional, low-rise character that has largely disappeared from the rest of central Tokyo, while still being well connected — the Ginza, Toei Asakusa, Tsukuba Express, and Tobu Skytree lines all converge here.
